Located on the drive-thru building behind the Commercial State Bank. Longhorn
cattle are definitely in El Campo's history. They were grazed on the open
range, rounded up, and brought to Prairie Switch and shipped to market. They
were a large part of the economy. Molly Melanson, granddaughter of the family
of bankers, is featured on her pony with these latter day longhorns that
actually lived in a pasture by her home. The first Commercial State Bank
is shown in the background along with rice mills, and the railroad track.
This beautiful old building is still in use, has recently been renovated
and stands proudly downtown. Notice the eyes of the cattle. They follow you,
and the young bull actually seems to turn his head as you pass by him. The
Commercial State Bank is locally owned and has contributed much to the growth
of El Campo.
