Located on Railroad Street. During harvest,
rice was cut by horse drawn binders, shocked in the field then a thresher
was brought to the field and the grain threshed, put into the sacks and
hauled to the mills. This mural was taken from an actual photo made on
the J.W. Leech farm. The inset shows water being pumped from a well for
irrigation. SP removed their depot and tracks so that trains no longer
carry rice to market. Today the downtown area is filled during harvest
with 18-wheel trucks that haul the grain to market. These 2 murals are
lighted at night courtesy of Rice Farmer's Co-op.
The caricature of R.H. Hancock taken from the local CITIZEN Newspaper (circa 1910). He was sitting atop one of the mills, and was saying "Eat a bowl of rice everyday". A favorite parting saying in El Campo is "have a rice day"
