A Slice of life in Early El Campo |
|
Located on Washington St. and painted on
the side of Tower Bargain Building. The three houses pictured were taken
from the Wharton County Historical Book. Pioneers John and Genelle Morris
lived in the center house, and Mrs. Morris' parents, Mr. and Mrs. J.E.
Evans, lived in the house on the right. John Morris, aged 105 at this
time (July 1997), is still living and active. Mrs. Morris is age 101
and is in a local nursing home. The park in the center of town is named
for Mrs. Evans. She made flower beds and cared for them because she was
ashamed of the weed patch passengers on the SP Train saw as they rode
the train through her town. Her efforts continue to inspire citizens
today. *Note the feathers flying, and the boiling pot of water as a chicken
is being prepared for a meal. The old store is typical of general
stores in El Campo. Before electricity and vacuum cleaners, rug beating
was the norm.
