El Campo's beginning is depicted on the wall of the El
Campo's Chamber of Commerce and Agriculture. El Campo was once a bald prairie. A railroad
track was built with a switching station, called the Prairie Switch. Cowboys brought cattle
in and bedded them down until the morning they would ship them to market. Around the camp
fire at night they looked across the prairie to see the glow from the lantern at Prairie
Switch, and it looked like a "pearl on the prairie". This is the artists
rendition of that legend.
