| Especially adapted to the harsh sub-zero temperatures
of their habitat, animals such as the Arctic Fox, Lynx, and Polar
Bear all live in the most Northern regions of Canada, Europe,
Asia, Siberia, and Scandinavia. During the milder months when
the land partially thaws and green growth is visible, they feast
on grasses, lichen, moss and tender shoots in preparation for
the hard winter months. During frozen times, the fox and lynx
prey upon ground-dwelling birds and small rodents and carrion. |

The Polar Bear (Thalarctos Maritimus) is 8 feet tall, and weighs an average of
900 pounds. It is a huge bear with a creamy-white coat. A very fast moving animal,
it can easily out-run a caribou over a short distance. It wanders over a larger
area than any other bear and can swim well. Often they winter on the ice floes
and sometimes bare their young there. Their many prey are seals, fish, seabirds,
arctic hares, caribou and musk oxen. In the summer it also eats berries and leaves
of tundra plants.
